Dr Becca Salmon, Founder of The Healthcare Club, shared her story with us at our recent 'Burnout & Boundaries' flagship event, including her guide to recognising and stepping out of burnout that we've shared below...
Burnout is a syndrome conceptualised as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It manifests in three dimensions, each highlighting a critical aspect of the stress response:
Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
Increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job
Reduced professional efficacy
How to Get Out of Burnout
1. Evaluate Your Job Satisfaction
Begin by examining what you like and dislike about your job. Identify elements within your work environment that you can change. This self-assessment helps in understanding the root causes of your burnout and the steps you can take to address them.
2. Reach Out for Support
Talking to someone—be it a trusted colleague, friend, or mental health professional—can provide immediate relief and perspective. Sharing your feelings can help lighten the emotional load and offer new insights into managing stress.
3. Reevaluate Your Priorities
Remember the saying, "You can’t pour from an empty cup." It’s crucial to re-evaluate your priorities and how you spend your time. Ensure that you’re dedicating time to activities that replenish your energy and bring you joy.
4. Redefine Success
Your job is not who you are; it is what you do. You are so much more than your professional role. Take time to redefine what success looks like for you. Consider whether your current job aligns with your personal definition of success and well-being.
5. Consider Your Next Steps
Once you have a clearer understanding of what you want and need, think about whether you want to leave your job or make changes within your current role. This decision should be based on a thorough evaluation of your well-being and long-term career satisfaction.
